Receiver's HDMI output is connected to an Epson EH-TW3200 projector's HDMI input (projector is Euro version of the US Epson 8345 it has no audio whatsoever). MBP and receiver are connected via a PNY mini-DP-to-HDMI adapter, which by both its Amazon description & reviews explicitly supports passthrough audio on Macs, and an AmazonBasics HDMI cable (ditto). MBP connected to a Harman Kardon BDS 577 AV receiver's HDMI input (a 5.1 receiver, connected to 5.1 speakers). mid-2012 MBP (non-retina) running 10.8.5 (including latest supplemental 10.8.5, which fixed a different issue with an HDMI audio connection not working after a Mac's wakeup from sleep).

When the projector off, HDMI audio passthrough to the receiver works fine when the projector is on, the Mac forgets it has HDMI sound output and will only use the MBP's internal speakers.
